Abstract:

My current research studies how automation reshapes labor markets in emerging and developing economies (EMDEs), and how Labor Market Institutions mediate these effects. Using a shift-share design across 29 EMDEs, it identifies two distinct shocks: the global collapse in frontier robot prices reduces formal manufacturing employment, while the collapse in software/AI prices suppresses real wages without destroying jobs. Both effects are heterogeneous across institutional environments. The PhD agenda seeks to extend this in two directions: a micro-empirical study of formal-to-informal worker transitions in Mexico (using IMSS and ENOE data across 424 commuting zones), and a dual-submarket Search and Matching model with endogenous bargaining power to rationalize the empirical findings theoretically.
